The teenager combed his fingers through his hair. “But Mom, I’m not sure what I want to do with my life.”
“Son, what interests you?”
He sighed. “I don’t know. I’ve thought of a tradesman of some sort. Maybe an electrician or plumber.”
His mother set her teacup back in its saucer. “Have you prayed about it?”
After everything she’d taught him about God, how could he tell her no?
He shook his head.
“Billy, you need to ask God to show you what He’s calling you to do. If you seek Him, He will let you know. ” She pushed her Bible across the table. “Read His word and pray.”
She left the room and closed the door.
Billy bowed his head. “Show me Your will for my life, Lord.” He opened the Bible and read.
This is a fictional story of course, and I don’t know if he ever questioned his calling, but what if Billy Graham never became an evangelist? Think of the lives he’s touched all over the world!
I shudder to think of the unsaved that perhaps wouldn’t have even thought of Jesus if Mr. Graham hadn’t listened to His calling. God uses and continues to use him (and his family) big time. Wow.
What has God called you to do?
He’s given me a passion for writing. It began as a young girl after reading many Nancy Drew books. I even started writing my own “Mindy Dobson” series! I wish I had kept them.
I ignored His calling and put it on the back burner. Recently, God reignited my passion and I picked up my pen (or laptop) again.
In order to grow my craft of writing, I need to devote time and energy to it. That’s a tough one in our fast-paced lives where we’re being stretched in every direction. Other activities rob the hours in our days. Where does one fit it all in?
Well, I decided it was time to just do it! Time to set other things aside, and let God use my writing. So, I prayed.
I joined a local writing group (that I now host in my home) and shortly after, enrolled in the first writing course from Jerry B. Jenkin’s Christian Writer’s Guild. I’m now on the last course and my skills as a writer have grown tremendously! I’ve been published in a magazine and have had several articles appear in a local Christian newspaper. I’m also writing my first novel called Amber Dreams. My goal is to finish it by summer 2012.
This all takes time, but it’s my passion and what God has called me to do. I’m finally listening to Him! So, if you don’t see me much, it’s because I’m hibernating. Please don’t think I’m ignoring you, I’m just perfecting my craft and writing for Him. I want God to use my words (well, His words) to touch others. Isn’t that what we should be doing? Ministering to others for Him?
What is God calling you to do? Don’t ignore Him. Just do it!!!
1 Samuel 3:10 (NIV)
The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
