Have you been so busy you’ve forgotten to enjoy the simple things in life? Or, you’ve set aside something you love to do in order to finish your current project?

I confess.

I have.

2013 has been a crazy year for me. One of mega stress and migraines. A colossal combination. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been total gloom and doom and I’ve learned a lot about myself. That’s always a good thing.

I know now I need to pace my work, writing, hobbies, etc. better. If I don’t, the stress will build and the migraines will come.

One of my favorite things to do is tole painting. So, recently I put aside everything else and picked up my paintbrush! Guess what?

It made me smile.

I’d forgotten how much I love to create a scene on wood. It’s also my place of serenity. Helps calm me. I realized this was the first time in 2013 I’ve painted. Shame on me!

When we forget to do the things we love, I believe we lose a part of ourselves.

Let’s make time to do the simple things.

What do you love to do? Do you take time to indulge or do you constantly leave it for “tomorrow”? Share with us!

From time to time I will be adding a post to my new “Calming Crafts” blog. How about you join me? Pull out your knitting needles, half-finished cross-stitch, etc. and tell me your story! If you’re interested in doing a guest craft blog for me, let me know.

Simple Things by Amy Grant

As soon as I figured out what I would call this blog, I immediately thought of Amy’s song. It fits. Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing your heart in this blog. I am so glad you have taken the time lately to paint…to relax and lose yourself in it. You do amazing work. I love my Angels you have painted! Our lives have definitely paralleled this year…I have been thankful lately to do one of the things I love to do…go out to lunch with my Husband or a friend to relax…enjoy conversation…share concerns…and love…

Your idea is inspiring! Two nights ago I said to Doug that I needed to start another Swedish weaving afghan now that the colder weather is headed our way. I also need to be more proactive in planning my writing ideas. A recent one is to take a picture of each of the items in my curio cabinet and write the story of why it is special to me…like my grandmother’s hankie that is held by the ivory carved napkin holder my grandfather made or the antique hand painted sugar bowl with the broken nob. It goes right up there with writing my memoir and adds credibility to my Writing Our Yesterday memoir workshops. I love your art work and it doesn’t surprise me that in picking it up, it brought a smile to your face. Thanks for the reminder to put our priorities in order and that has to include doing the things we love to do that bring us pleasure. You’re a dear friend!

Okay, you’ve challenged me. I have a piece of cross stick that I began 20+ years ago that I never finished. It was a series of three Amish scenes. 1st two are complete. The third, I stitched about ten years back, except for the back stitching. Today, I happened to run across my cross-stitch threads. Must be time to act!

By the way, I love your crafts.

I have a few cross stitch pieces I need to pick up again! And some knitting too. If you’re interested in writing a craft guest blog for me (or any other blog!), I’d love it! Thanks for your comments!

Well I am not the least bit crafty. But I have taken time to spend reading something I haven’t done in a very long time. God bless all you crafty people.

Reading is a great way to spend our time. I should also do it more instead of turning on the TV! Thanks Di.

One of my favorite things to do are going on walks with my husband. Especially now, in fall, with our neighborhood filled with such beautiful colors! Our walks calm me, recharge me, remind me how much I love him. We’ve been walking for over 18 years. Such wonderful memories!
