“God can use you anywhere, anytime,” the evangelist said. “Just trust.”

Sandy shook her head and muted the television.

I’m too old for that.

She leaned back, picked up her knitting and rocked–needles clicking in perfect rhythm to the squeaky wooden chair. She loved the corner by the fireplace. It was her favorite spot in the nursing home. She could tuck in here and lose herself from reality.

A deep laughter caught her attention. Her rocking chair and needles stopped midstream. She turned up her hearing aid and listened.

“Did you hear Sandy has been voted as the friendliest resident this year? I bet that will surprise her.”

The rest of Adam’s conversation with the other resident faded as they walked down the corridor.

Sandy shook her head and laughed.

Well God, I guess I was wrong. I love your sense of humor.

Have you ever laughed at God? Maybe shook your head and said, “What are you thinking, God? There’s no way that could ever happen.” We’re not alone.

Sarah did when she heard the Lord tell Abraham that she would have a child. She was too old! I can imagine her rolling on the floor laughing. “There’s just no way!”

The joke was on her, wasn’t it? What can we glean from Sarah’s story?

Nothing is impossible with God. You’d think after all her years following God she wouldn’t have doubted all He could do. But she did. She not only doubted him, but she basically laughed in His face! Have we ever done that? Didn’t trust what we thought we heard God saying? Maybe God is calling us to do something out of our comfort zone and we just don’t think we can do it. We need to inhale and jump in with both feet, trusting God will take care of the rest.

God can use us at any age. How many times have we doubted that? Are we ever too young to be used of God? Too old? NO!! I’ve heard of children witnessing to their friends and classmates. They can sometimes be bolder in their faith than adults. What about that older couple you’ve seen helping others in need? Yes, God definitely can use us at any age. Let’s not forget that the next time we doubt our usefulness.

Sometimes we need a good laugh. I realize Sarah shouldn’t have laughed at God’s promise, but in her shoes I’m sure we’d do the same thing. Are there times when you see God working in an unusual way and you just have to chuckle? Go ahead and do it! God does have a sense of humor. He also knows our lives are stressful and we just need a roll-on-the-floor-laughing moment!!

There are those who believe God is cruel, stiff-necked, and maybe even cynical. Just a God of rules. That’s far from the truth. Take a moment and close your eyes. Then visualize God’s laughter. What do you see? I picture Him in a perfect body and every part of it is shaking as he laughs.

Next, listen. What do you hear? A room booming with joy? That’s how I hear Him.

God’s laughter is contagious.

I’m always amazed when I find songs that fit my blog. Makes me laugh! 😀 Did you know that the name Isaac means laughter? Sarah and Abraham found the perfect name for the child they never thought they’d have. This child’s descendants would include the Messiah. Wow. God has a perfect plan for all of us!
