From My Playlist – Be Still

I drank my water and stretched out on the mat, letting the sweat drip from my weary body. I worked hard in the last hour to make it to this moment. My time of peace in shavasana.

The intense heat threatened to consume me. I breathed in and out slowly.

“Lay still,” the instructor said. “Resist the urge to fidget, wipe away the sweat, fix your clothes, or have control.”

Thoughts began to race through my mind of what I had to do when I got home. Could I finish my edits, watch my show, read my—

“Be still,” the instructor whispered.

These two words silenced my thoughts, and as I left the studio that day it hit me. How often do we do that in our lives? When we’re broken and going through challenges, do we fidget and try to wipe the struggle away by taking on more activities that make us busier?

Do we have to be in total control? Why can’t we just be still?

When I was little and we were getting ready to pose for a picture, I always had to scratch my knee, elbow, nose, or something. My mom called me “little Miss Fidget.” I couldn’t help it. As soon as you tell me not to fidget, I do! I just can’t help it.

I’d heard these words spoken from other instructors before, so why did they hit me hard on this particular day?

be still

I’m not entirely sure.

Maybe because God knew I was heading into another busy workweek and He wanted to remind me that HE was in control. Not me.

Or, maybe I had finally stopped long enough to listen.

Maybe I was being still long enough to hear the words God wanted me to hear.

Are we trying too hard to control all aspects in our lives that we don’t listen to what our Father is telling us? Do we think we can do a better job than Him? Hardly.

How about we stop fidgeting and just listen to those two words.

Be still.

How do we be still in a crazy world? What are your thoughts? Share some tips with us so we can all learn.

Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

He says, “Be stilland know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Be Still (by Kari Jobe and Edmond Martin Cash)

I love the second verse of this song. Listen closely. Let’s stand on the mountain and let God wrap His arms around us!

Hi Dar, What a beautiful, thoughtful, blog. One of my favourite Psalms is 46:10 AND one of my favourite songs is, “Be still and know that I am God”. You have no idea how much I needed to hear this today. We all too often hear all the busyness, and all the other voices in our heads. Thank you for inspiring me today. Keep writing, I sure treasure your words.
    And again Happy Birthday!
    Love, your cuz, Cheryl

Hi Cheryl! Being still is so tough! I struggle with it often. Glad you found the blog helpful. Thanks for stopping by. Love you! xo

If it’s not physical busyness, it’s what I call the Butterfly Syndrome, thoughts flitting from one thing to the next. I’m learning to examine the I Shoulds in my life and weigh them. Should I or shouldn’t I? Why or why not? I’m also learning to live in the Now. The Bible instructs us to take our thoughts captive to Christ. When I remember that, it’s much easier to “be still.” Thanks for the encouragement, my friend.

Hi Darlene… over the years I have come to appreciate the stillness of the wilderness, often in places 250 miles from the nearest person. It is here I learned to appreciate His creation and the beauty and balance we need in life. I often sit in the quite of the day with pen and paper and jot down thoughts as they pass. After I glean out what I feel the Father is calling of me. Proverbs 3:5-10 so often come to play…

    Hugs from Alberta

Awesome, Rolly! No better place to be still than in the wilderness! Love it. Thanks for sharing!
      God bless!
