And His name shall be . . .
Parents take great pride in naming their children. They go through a list of names then hum and hah before finally making a decision. It’s a tough process. The name has to be just right. The perfect fit. Now, I’ve never been a Mom, but I do go through a similar process when naming my characters in my writing. I research the meaning of names, keep my ear to the ground on what’s popular, listen to family, friends, co-workers name their children/grandchildren. Steal from the entertaining world.
It’s fun to name your children/characters.
But what do you think our Father went through when He named His only begotten son?
Did He go through a list?
I somehow doubt it. He knew what to tell the angel who conveyed the name to Mary. It was a perfect fit for a perfect man.
What does Jesus mean?
To rescue
Salvation
God saves
Savior
How fitting the baby would be named Jesus as he came into the world to save us from our sins. Long before he was born, he had many names.
Wonderful Counsellor
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
Prince of Peace
Do we think of that during the Christmas season or do we get too wrapped up in the busyness of it? The shopping, baking, decorating, parties, etc. How about we slow down this Christmas? Take a break from having to do everything, go to all the events, have the best-looking display on our lawns, etc. Don’t get me wrong, this is my favorite time of year and I love to do all those things I mentioned, but a question niggles in my brain. Is that what Jesus would want?
No. He wants us to be still and celebrate His birth. Take part in the hush of celebrations.
The real reason for the season.
The Savior sent into the world with the perfect name.
Jesus.
Isaiah 9:6 (VOICE)
Hope of all hopes, dream of our dreams, a child is born, sweet-breathed; a son is given to us: a living gift.
And even now, with tiny features and dewy hair, He is great. The power of leadership, and the weight of authority, will rest on His shoulders. His name? His name we’ll know in many ways—He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Dear Father everlasting, ever-present never-failing, Master of Wholeness, Prince of Peace.
From the Turner House to yours. Be blessed as we celebrate His birth!
