Can a Romance Novel include a bit of adventure and suspense?

By Melony Teague

My answer, YES!

A book reviewer said about A Promise to Keep:

“The last 3\4 of the book, because of Michael’s career, even brought a great deal of heart-pounding suspense.”

Let us talk about this:

Michael is a technical rescuer and of course, because of his job, there had to be a rescue scene. Many times in Romantic Suspense, we find FBI agents and police and sometimes EMT, but firefighters and technical rescuers are perhaps not as frequently written about.

The reason why I included technical rescuers and particularly Michael and his crew, who have specialized skills, like cave diving, was because I was inspired by the Thai Cave Rescue and all the people that worked together to get the boys out of the cave in Thailand. The cave rescuers did not see themselves as heroes, but rather doing their job.

What fascinated me the most is that the media saw their work as risky and perhaps reckless, but I loved how the divers corrected them by saying that they do not take unnecessary risks and everything they do is meticulously planned for success and they do not put themselves at risk.

I loved that part. So I guess I wanted to explore the idea of accepting the risk that comes with someone’s job. How would a love interest feel if their spouse or significant other put themselves out there day after day to help others? And since Savannah had already been wounded and was in a vulnerable place, this made the conflict in this area all the more fascinating to me. I hope readers will enjoy seeing how Michael and Savannah work their issues in this area.

A Promise to Keep is by no means a romantic suspense novel, but you’ll find that since I am a big fan of romantic suspense, rom coms and contemporary romance, A Promise to Keep has elements of all of these.

Thanks for celebrating my book birthday with me!

ADD THE BOOK TO GOODREADS

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Promise. A High School Reunion. And a pact that proves harder to keep.

Research librarian Savannah Sanderson wants nothing more than to escape into her happily-ever-after novels with their larger-than-life fictional heroes. But a promise to her late husband has her attending her dreaded twenty-year high school reunion, drinking ghastly punch, and taking desperate measures just to keep her vow, even if she has to hide behind the décor to do it.

Once a reckless troublemaker, Michael McCann fled town after graduation. Now a professional technical rescuer, he’s back for the reunion, but on his trip down memory lane, he soon comes face to face with unresolved issues, namely Savannah. Before the night is over, a pact between these two old friends will lead them on an adventure into uncharted emotional territory where Michael must confront his past regrets and find the courage to reveal the truth. But can Savannah fly from her sheltered nest and risk her heart on a real-life hero?
