One woman leaned over and whispered to her husband, “I don’t like this new worship stuff. Where is God in that repetitious beat?”

A girl poked her friend sitting next to her. “Do we really have to listen to another old boring hymn?” They giggled until her parents shushed them.

Comments like these seem to be coming out of the woodwork and eating away at our churches like termites devouring aged wood. Why do we complain? Because the evil one knows God uses music to heal.

That’s what happened to me.

Music has always been a big part of my life. My father used to sing and play the guitar. My brother, sister, and I sang in the choir. We loved to “make a joyful noise.” (Well, let’s hope it was!)

When reality sank in that my husband was a homosexual and my marriage was over, music helped my healing process. Many times, I sat in my rocking chair with my stereo blaring. Tears poured down my cheeks as I swayed back and forth, letting the words soothe my soul.

God used the lyrics (and yes, sometimes even the beat) to speak to me. Comfort me. Heal me. It was like Jesus wrapped His arms around me and sang in my ear.

The one song that stood out during that time was “Jesus Will Still Be There,” by Point of Grace. Listen to the song:

I sang that song at the top of my lungs, with my hands raised up, and tears streaming down my face. I knew Jesus was there.

I believe the old adage to be true—music does soothe the soul. I would also add it helps heal the heart. (Click to tweet)

Next time we feel like complaining about the music in our churches, we must remember that a song we don’t like could be healing someone else’s heart right at that particular moment!
