Behind the Scenes of Echoes of Darkness: Writing Light into a Darkened World

Every story begins with a spark—a “what if” question that refuses to let go. For Echoes of Darkness, that spark ignited from my deep desire to shine God’s light into our dark and hurting world. I’ve always believed that light pierces darkness in the most unexpected ways, and I wanted that message woven into every page of Oaklynn and Caleb’s journey.

Constable Oaklynn Brock, my heroine, came to life as a woman shaped by past trauma but determined to use her skills to serve justice. I saw her as someone holding onto a thread of hope, even as she walks through some of life’s darkest places—literally and emotionally. Caleb Greene, a member of the Canadian Watchers Squad, emerged as the perfect counterpart. He’s strong, steady, and wrestling with his own questions about faith and failure. Together, they became more than a team—they became two broken people learning how to trust, forgive, and believe again.

Before I could put their story on the page, I had a lot of homework to do. I looked into protocols of writing to inmates within Canada, different types of drugs, guns, law enforcement procedures, cults, K-9s, military, medical information.

One of the most eye-opening—and scary—parts of my research was learning just how many cults are out there. Yikes. We need to shine Christ’s light!

Writing Echoes of Darkness was an emotional process. I wanted to show not just the external suspense of chasing down a killer but also the internal battles we all face—fear, doubt, grief, guilt. But through it all, I wanted readers to know that God never leaves us, even when we can’t see Him. His light still shines. That’s the heart of Oaklynn and Caleb’s story: discovering that faith doesn’t mean we’re never afraid. It means we believe He’s with us in the fear.

This story is a reminder that hope isn’t lost, even when the night feels endless. God’s presence is the constant light guiding us home.

As you turn the pages of my new release, I hope you’re pulled into the suspense and danger—but even more, I hope you’re reminded of the Light that overcomes all darkness. Because no matter how far we fall, no matter how broken we feel, God is there. And He’s not finished with our story yet.

Let’s be that single torch that explodes and spreads light into our darkened world. (Click to tweet)
